Baggage by Dan Powell

We were just ourselves that day, without a care. It was our good fortune that this moment in time was frozen in a box camera. It was our first real New York portrait. Who we were. Only weeks before we had been at the bottom, but our blue star, as Robert called it, was rising. We boarded the F train for the long ride back, returned to our little room, and cleared off the bed, happy to be together. —Patti Smith, Just Kids

at 3:32 this morning - slow motion epiphany: NEED….ROAD….TRIP. Um, have I heard this somewhere lately?? (slow moving does nOt undermine validity.) Road trip could include water, water is a viable road, sure it is - like how about going to teach English in France? Ride motorcycles round Europe, and a Peugeot auto is pretty fine no matter what they say.) In the late afternoon, 15 minutes of shoe-shining for extra beer money.

Just about ready to crawl out of my skin around now. Oh, don’t be alarmed, perfectly willing to bring my skin along, (in fact I’d prefer), as long as my skin will let me out, that is.

I wake up at 7am to a weak morning light. I feel somewhat rested.

But I am supposed to be waking in blackness, excruciatingly under-slept, heart pounding, ready to rush. I study the clock near my head, trying to comprehend the strategy of this enemy. No matter how much I scrutinize my clock, however, or the driver who was to ring my doorbell, it will never again be 3:00 am, Wednesday, February 2, 2011. Never. I digest this fact.

I’m supposed to be on a train bound for DC. Watching the river of today’s events that have not yet happened, but now will never happen, flow heedlessly away from me, I say to myself: double darn.

Double darn is not what I say to myself.

Sure, tomorrow comes another 3am, another train. That will be a four alarm event.
